Anemia
Overview
Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to tissues. Common causes include iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic disease, and blood loss. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, and paleness.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have persistent fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, or dizziness. Blood tests can confirm anemia and identify the cause.
More information
A hematologist or GP can diagnose and treat anemia. Treatment depends on the cause—e.g. iron supplements for iron deficiency, B12 for pernicious anemia. Underlying causes (e.g. bleeding) must be addressed.
