Sore Throat
Overview
Sore throat (pharyngitis) is pain or irritation in the throat, often worse when swallowing. Most cases are viral (cold, flu); some are bacterial (e.g. strep throat). Allergies and dry air can also cause throat discomfort.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if sore throat is severe, lasts more than a week, is accompanied by high fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a rash. Strep testing may be needed.
More information
Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers help. Antibiotics are only for bacterial infections (e.g. strep). An ENT can evaluate chronic or recurrent sore throats.
